Arcigay Palermo is the provincial committee of Arcigay for the provinces of Palermo and Trapani.
The objectives of Arcigay Palermo are the promotion and defense of human and civil rights, the fight against homophobia and heterosexism, against prejudice and discrimination. It is committed to achieving equal dignity and equal opportunities among individuals regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other condition.
The association was founded in Palermo in 1980 by Gino Campanella, Massimo Milani, Vincenzo Scimonelli and others, and over the last 30 years it has ceased to exist several times, but has been refounded each time.
The headquarters of the Association are the Rainbow Workshops in Via della Rosa at Gioiamia 2/4 in Palermo.
Arcigay Palermo provides the LGBTIQ community and the surrounding area with services such as socialization and reception, counseling and psychological support, legal advice, and medical advice. Volunteers also work to promote LGBTQ culture, promote conscious sexuality and protect against sexually transmitted diseases, organize and host meetings in schools and universities, celebrate and commemorate community anniversaries and holidays, and lobby public administration, associations, and political parties, among others.
The association manages The migration, a help desk for LGBTIQ migrants, funded for two years by the’8×1000 to the Waldensian Church.
Arcigay Palermo collaborates with the LGBTIQ associations present in the area, has contributed to founding the Stop Homophobia Coordination and the Palermo Pride Coordination, and contributed significantly to organizing the 2010 Sicily Pride (the first Pride ever held in the city) and the Palermo Pride, which has now reached its sixth edition.
The association is a member of the Nourredine Adnane Anti-Racist Coordination and part of the Municipal Council for Peace, Human Rights, Nonviolence and Disarmament.
The association is not affiliated with any political party and acts as a political interlocutor and promoter of civil rights and citizenship.
