SPORTS AREA

Sport, like family and school, is one of the social places where a person, a citizen, is trained and educated to respect and value diversity.

Unfortunately, sport is also the place where it is currently difficult in Italy to come out and freely live one's sexual orientation or gender identity, regardless of the type of sport one practices.

Homophobia, transphobia, and all forms of hatred, whether manifested at sporting events or in sports venues, must be combated, and it's time for sports clubs to take visible steps forward on these issues. The sport that enters our homes every week is a tool for spreading positive and educational messages and must also be effective in the fight for civil rights.

Arcigay aims to support and amplify the entire Italian LGBTI+ sports community, offering a forum for information on teams and sports initiatives, fostering constructive dialogue and fostering best practices.

We decided to create the Arcigay Sport map and the Arcigaysport Instagram profile to give a voice to all LGBTI+ athletes in Italy and beyond, including fans, sports managers, coaches, referees, spectators, and LGBTI+ sports enthusiasts.

If you're part of a sports team or group, if you'd like to build a team, or if you'd like information about Arcigay's sports-related projects, contact Marco Arlati, a member of the Arcigay National Secretariat responsible for sports.

The actions that will be implemented are:

Fighting homophobia and transphobia in sports at all levels, starting with a call to the various CONI federations to incorporate their commitment to combating discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in sport into their statutes.

To be an amplifier of sports culture within our LGBTI+ community, giving space and importance to all the sporting realities that have emerged in Italy in recent years and encouraging the birth of others.

Provide full support to all projects and actions implemented by third parties to combat and resolve the problem of insults in stadiums and arenas. These insults are at the root of hatred and destroy the intrinsic values of sport.

Foster a culture of coming out in sport.

Build partnerships and synergies at major sporting events in Italy, as strategic tools for promoting the country's well-being and social and civic growth, leveraging sport's potential to promote civil rights and fight against all forms of discrimination.

Develop and spread diversity management and equality standards in companies and businesses that love and believe in sport, investing and taking on the role of sponsor and/or owner.

The Vision of the “Sports Group” of Arcigay

Sports, having both the potential and responsibility to promote education, respect, inclusion and companionship, is one of the social settings where individuals get educated about respect and the value of diversity the most.

Unfortunately, in Italy, in sports it's still nowadays difficult to come out and freely live one's sexual orientation or gender identity, regardless of the type of sport being practiced.

Homophobia, transphobia, and any form of hatred that manifests in sporting events or sports facilities must be fought against, and it's time for sports organizations to take a visible step forward on the above-mentioned issues. Sport is a tool to spread positive and educational messages.

Arcigay aims to provide a safe space where people may find information about LGBTI-inclusive teams and sports initiatives, to promote the establishment and exchange of LGBTI-inclusive sports-related best practices.

Arcigay opted for the designing of an Arcigay Sport Map and the opening of an Instagram profile Arcigaysport in order to give a voice to all LGBTI+ athletes in Italy and beyond, as well as to sports fans, sports executives, coaches, referees, spectators, and enthusiasts of LGBTI+ sports throughout the country.

If you are part of a team or a sporting group, if you want to build a team, if you are in need of any information about Arcigay's sports-related projects, contact Marco Arlati,

the first-ever “Sports Affairs Coordinator” of Arcigay, Marco Arlati and elected member of the national Executive Board of Arcigay.

The Mission of the “Sports Group” of Arcigay

-Combating homophobia and transphobia in sports at all levels, beginning with the submission of a formal request to several CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee) federations to commit themselves against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity;

-Echoing the benefits of an inclusive sports culture within the LGBTI+ community, giving space and importance to all sports initiatives that have emerged in Italy in recent years and facilitating the rising of further ones;

-Providing cooperative third parties with full support to address and solve the massive issue of insults in stadiums and arenas, insults that are at the very root of anti-LGBTI+ hatred in sport and undermine the values that sport itself upholds;

-Promoting coming out in sports;

-Establishing collaborations and synergies at major sporting events in Italy, adopting strategic tools for promoting well-being and the country's civil and social growth, leveraging the potential of sports for the promotion of civil rights and the fight against all forms of discrimination;

-Developing and promoting diversity management and equality tools and standards within companies and organizations that believe in the potential inclusiveness of all sports, by investing and taking on the role of sponsors and/or owners.

On May 4, 2016, the 244th National Council of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) amended its statute to insert an ad-hoc provision aiming at combating discrimination based on sexual orientation in sports. However, more than two years later, none of the sports federations affiliated with CONI has embodied that specific provision into its corresponding statute.

Arcigay calls on the CONI federations to adopt a specific statutory provision prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
